Australia Day

Next week we will be celebrating Australia Day! Woohoo!!! In Australia, January 26th is a very special day that celebrates the arrival of some of the first British ships to the island. February 7th is known as New Zealand day, so we will combine the both of them in a day-long celebration next week!!!!



We are excited to eat some Australian food, play some traditional games, sing "Waltzing Matilda", as well as share what we have been researching about Australia with the rest of our classmates!

St. Patrick's Day 2013

Next week (on Thursday March 14th) we will celebrate St. Patrick's Day! There will be dancing, arts and crafts, games, singing, etc. Make sure you wear GREEN.

This is an Irish holiday, but it is also very popular in the United States. In order to celebrate it properly we need to know some basic information about St. Patrick and Ireland. Read this website, so you can learn important facts about Ireland. Did anything surprise you?

Ireland is a beautiful country. It is an island near England. They speak English and Gaelic. If you watch this video and listen to the beautiful, traditional music you'll get a "tour" of the country. Popular Irish sports are Gaelic football and hurling. Would you like to learn how to play one of these games?

Do you like to dance (or to watch dancing)? Irish dancing is very special and unique.This is Irish dancing with modern costumes.

Another teacher's assistant made this video that gives you the most important information about St. Patrick and why he is important. Want to make sure you understood everything? Check out a second video. What new information did you learn?

We are learning the song Molly Mallone. (Above is a statue of her!) Here's a famous Irish band singing the song. And, to practice, watch this version with lyrics. In America, we celebrate St. Patrick's Day with big parades just like they do in Dublin. Here is a video that shows part of the 5-hours-long parade in New York City. What do you think? In Chicago the city dyes the river green.

The Wizard of Oz

This year the fifth grade classes are dressing up as characters from The Wizard of Oz for Carnival. We are also learning the song  "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
Make sure you understand the words and how to pronounce them!
This song is very popular so there are many different versions. Here is a traditional one, sung by Judy Garland. This is a Hawaiian version or check out this one by Beyonce or listen to it sung in a jazz/rock style!

Volcanos

A volcano forms when hot magma rises to the Earth's surface.
Volcanos are very exciting because we can see black ash and red lava errupting from the Earth.

Here is a video of the world's largest volcano (located in Hawaii, United States) errupting in 2011. Here is another video of the same volcano. In this one you can clearly see the huge crater. This website has lots of information about volcanos (use it for studying!) and cool pictures too. Check out some more information at this website so you can be a volcano expert!
